This board began as a single, substantial piece of Walnut, chosen for its natural grain, color variation, and character. There was some thought given to cutting it apart and adding contrasting woods, but that would have interrupted what made this particular piece worth choosing in the first place. The decision was to leave it whole.
Sometimes craftsmanship is about bringing separate elements together. Other times, it is knowing when not to. With this board, the work was not about creating a pattern, but preserving one already there. Its uninterrupted surface keeps the focus on the Walnut itself.
Its size was intentional. It gives the board a substantial presence while allowing more of the Walnut’s character to remain visible. The grain has room to move across the surface rather than being reduced to a smaller section of what the original piece had to offer.
It is meant to be used, but it does not need to disappear when the work is finished. It can remain on the counter, move to the table, and become part of the space around it. Over time, use will leave its own marks, adding the story of the home it belongs to alongside the story already present in the wood.
This one-of-one board measures 22″ long × 10¾″ wide. The solid Walnut is 1⅝″ thick, with an overall height of 1¹⁵⁄₁₆″ including the rubber feet.
Cleaning After Use
- Rinse: Rinse with warm water after use to prevent food residue from drying on the surface.
- Gently Scrub: Use a soft sponge or cloth with a few drops of mild soap (like Dawn) to scrub away food particles.
- Rinse & Dry: Thoroughly rinse off all soap suds and dry immediately with a clean towel.
- Air Dry: Propped the board upright on its side to ensure air flows around both faces as it finishes air-drying
Key Maintenance Warnings
- No Soaking: Never submerge the board in a sink of water for more than a "quick dunk".
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use bleach, ammonia, or abrasive scrubbers like steel wool, which can strip the protective finish.
Specialized Cleaning Methods
For a deeper clean or specific needs:
- Vinegar Solution: Mix 1 part vinegar with 10 parts water for a light, natural disinfectant wipe-down.
- Stain & Odor Removal: Rub a lemon half with coarse salt over the wood to lift stubborn stains and neutralize odors naturally.
